【Presentation of Research Findings at the Sino Japan Nursing Academic Conference】
Results from two studies, “How Floods Impact Pediatric Patients Receiving Home Care and the Situation Regarding Relief Efforts” and “Feasibility of Using Japanese Pamphlets in China: Mid- to Long-term Post-disaster Use for Children” were presented orally at the Sino Japan Nursing Academic Conference held in Suzhou, China between September 18 and 20, 2006. The former was a study of how the flood caused by Typhoon No.23 ("Tokage"), which struck the Toyooka area of Hyogo Prefecture, impacted children requiring medical care, their families, and the support they received. The latter was an evaluation of whether pamphlets developed by the CEO for disaster areas could be used in China. |

【Symposium "Disaster Preparedness in Pediatric Wards"】
Approximately 150 people attended the symposium at the Japanese Society of Child Health Nursing's 15th Academic Conference, which was held in Yokohama on July 23 and 24, 2005. The symposium examined hospital wards and nurses affected by the Great Hanshin and Chuetsu Earthquakes, while using the results of a disaster awareness survey* to shed light on pediatric ward disaster care plans. There was also a discussion with audience members about how to protect children in pediatric wards during a disaster. At the end of the session, we received inquiries from six facilities regarding the implementation of pediatric ward disaster care plans.
*For the disaster awareness survey, a total of 500 questionnaires were distributed to about 800 attendees of the conference before the conference started, out of which we received 295 responses) |

【Creating and Shipping Disaster Area Guideline Pamphlets】
We received inquiries from people asking whether we had any useful information for nurses providing care to children and their families who survived the October 23, 2004 Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake. In response, we created “Children Living in Disaster Areas − Support for Families” and “Children Living in Disaster Areas − What Nurses Can Do,” both of which include essential information for caring for children and families affected by disasters. The information is based on our experiences during the Great Hanshin Earthquake as well as other literature related to that disaster. The printed pamphlets were shipped to the Niigata Nursing Association. |
