How to store pain medicines at home
It is advisable to keep pain medicines, with the written directions for using the medicines, in a can or plastic bag to protect them from damage. Since the best storage method differs depending on the type of medicine, such as liquids and skin patches, consult with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
If you run out of pain medicine
If you can go to a hospital, bring with you the memo containing the names and dosages of the pain medicines you are receiving, to get a prescription and the medicines. Even in emergency situations, hospitals keep a stock of medicines. It is advisable to go to a hospital before you run out of medicine. Hospitals with a palliative care ward will respond flexibly to pain control needs. To prepare against disaster, it is good to know the location of a palliative care clinic or ward in your region.
If you cannot go to a hospital, ask someone to get the medicine for you. Contact your visiting nurse or your nurse in the outpatient department immediately, if you can. If you cannot contact your nurse or doctor, ask medical professionals (visiting nurse, public health nurse, other nurse) working as volunteers for help. Give the volunteer the memo about your medicines in your emergency bag to provide them with accurate information on the medicines you are taking.
