The Nursing Management Method Development Project

February 2007

An on-site survey of the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki Earthquake was conducted.
The survey showed that health care providers’ past experiences had a profound influence on the disaster nursing activities, especially those related to tsunamis. In addition, local residents’ experiences and regional coordination systems were sources of essential and important information.

December 2006 – January 2007

The group conducted an on-site survey of the Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake.
All facilities that the group visited in this survey were located near the major active faults, including some located in zones where active tectonic activities are still taking place. The damages sustained, however, varied from one zone to another. The group was able to meet with a director of nursing who spoke  the difficulty in carrying out disaster nursing activities in the various suffering situation, also she was a disaster victim herself.

November 13 and 14, 2006

The group conducted an on-site survey of the Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake.
Through interviews with a director of nursing, the group was able to find out specifics on issues such as patient safety, assistance for people in their daily lives, and support for continueing medical treatment, as well as on innovative efforts made by nursing professionals. We were struck particularly by their statements on the importance of disaster preparedness training.

November 6 to 7, 2006

The group conducted an on-site survey of the eruption of Hokkaido’s Mount Usu.
The interviewees indicated that the entire hospital had to be evacuated and spoke of the fear of pyroclastic flow and volcanic eruption. The wisdom gained from local residents’ experiences on sensing signs of an impending event was really something. We learned, among other things, about how they evacuated to safety and subsequent nursing activities.
