Caring for the mind

It is reported that speaking to people of their experiences helps pregnant women and postpartum mothers victimized by disasters to reorganize their thoughts and relieve stress. Also, even in surrounding areas where damage was relatively light, it is said that creating an opportunity once every six months or so to look back on the disaster and to start anew is important.

During times of disaster, pregnant women and postpartum mothers often transfer to other surrounding areas for medical examinations and delivery. Therefore, it is important not only for disaster areas but also for the surrounding regions and medical facilities to make assessments of the condition of the minds of pregnant women and postpartum mothers , and provide information regarding gcaring for the mind.h When you are involved with pregnant women and postpartum mothers victimized by disasters, try to give assurance to them that they are doing their best as mothers under abnormal circumstances, and that everything will be OK. There is no need for you to force them to speak of their experiences, but let them know that if they wish to talk about it you are always ready to listen, and then closely listen to what they have to say to you.

Also, the symptoms of post-traumatic stress reaction (PTSR) (see condition of the minds on p. 10) of pregnant women and postpartum mothers can last over a month, and there have been reports that indicated that every one experiencing the symptoms did nothing about them. The transition to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) takes place approximately one month after a disaster strikes, so take opportunities such as health checkups of pregnant women and postpartum mothers as well as infants to make assessments on the stress reactions of pregnant women and postpartum mothers, and either provide or introduce necessary care for each.
