Message from the Project Team

We conduct research to grasp the actual conditions of community disaster prevention activities and clarify problems related to voluntary disaster prevention activities, with a particular emphasis on investigating communities' efforts toward the most vulnerable groups in disasters to identify problems and possible support measures. We have interviewed representatives of voluntary disaster prevention organizations in Akashi City, in western Japan. As a result, it has been revealed that only a few communities are active in disaster prevention activities and that administrative guidance and support are insufficient. There is a growing perception that in order to facilitate residents' involvement in disaster prevention activities, it is necessary to promote overall community activities, including those related to welfare and environmental protection. To do so, more administrative support will be needed. We are now preparing to hold a meeting in June to provide an opportunity for representatives of communities that are active in disaster prevention to get together with local government officials. There, representatives of communities will report on their disaster prevention efforts, and exchange views and opinions on future challenges with the local government. We promote active participation of communities in disaster prevention.
